|
Aotearoa New Zealand has a rich heritage of peace initiatives in its indigenous and other cultures. It has an established international reputation for peace activities and initiatives and has taken a leadership role in the anti-nuclear movement, furthering the abolition of nuclear weapons globally. Regionally, Aotearoa New Zealand has assumed a growing peace-keeping and peace-building role in the Pacific. Domestically, the Treaty of Waitangi, the Waitangi Tribunal and the treaty settlements process serve as examples of working towards positive biculturalism. The conference process for dealing with youth and adult offenders is a model example of restorative justice at work. Peace education has been integrated into the school curriculum. These landmarks in our country’s development which acknowledge and implement the partnership between Moriori/Maori and Pakeha provide an evolving framework for peace in our society. |
