About our Logo

The logo was designed by Tane Solomon, the nephew of Maui Solomon, a trustee.  The style design represents the Hopo (toroa or albatross) flying over the ocean and the five sided figure symbolises a maunga (mountain) and the shape of Kopinga Marae on Rekohu (Chatham Islands).

LogoThe albatross (feathers) is a symbol of peace for Moriori and Parihaka and a taonga for Southern Ngai Tahu and indeed for all New Zealanders.

Its ability to effortlessly traverse the globe and return home is an inspiration for the Peace Centre which its message of peace to the world. The koru design symbolises new life and new beginnings.

The Government has given $6 million to Moriori to revive our culture, identity, language and heritage.

An important aspect of that heritage is the 500-year legacy of peace practised by Moriori.
